MBR of Windows undreadable, Rollback RX woes - Windows 10 Support - BleepingComputer

Computer type: Windows 10 64 bit.
issue: MBR not readable by windows due to encryption of backup software "Rollback RX"
Windows shows (No Bootable Device) on boot.

I think I"m done using Rollback RX.  https://horizondatasys.com/download/[1]

Rollback RX is a "dynamic instant restore solution"

It allows you to restore points in time on the computer.

However, in doing so it encrypts the hard drive.

This means that if windows in its infinite wisdom updates when it tries to boot windows if the mbr is messed up windows will not load.

Now 99% of the times windows works fine and the software Rollback RX has saved my bacon a few times. However, it's also a ticking time bomb because one day when windows change the MBR (don't know how or why) windows will refuse to load.

You can restore MBR with a system restore disk of Windows 10 right?
Well no. Because it doesn't find the OS.

When using an installer for Windows 10 and choosing to repair my computer, advanced, CMD

I'm trying to use the found instructions to fix MBR which is designed for a non-encrypted drive.
And because Rollback RX encrypts it..

bootrec.exe /scanOS shows no drive found

However, there's hope.
Rollback RX offers a Recovery Tool here: https://horizondatasys.com/downloads/Tools/RecoveryTools_USB_v11.zip
This tool boots and is supposed to let one decrypt the hard drive. This seems to work as the next time you boot the restore of Windows 10 from a install ISO and select repair computer Advanced Troubleshoot Open CMD and run the following [2]

How to reset Windows 10 MBR (Master Boot Record)

**Important** You will need a Windows 10 installation media, which you can acquire from this link(Download Windows 10 Media Creation Tool). You need an empty USB flash drive or CD/DVD.

1. Booting into the Windows 10 setup via a Windows 10 installation media, select “Repair your computer” in the bottom part of the window, then “Troubleshoot”.

 Then select “Advanced options”.

2. From here choose the Command Prompt. Enter the following commands one at a time into the prompt:

bootrec.exe /fixmbr

bootrec.exe /fixboot

bootrec.exe /scanOS

bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

3. After receiving a success confirmation. Close the CMD window by typing 'Exit' and restart your PC.

4. If by any chance you are still unable to boot after, boot into the installation media again and click on "Automatic Repair" and then restart your PC after.

bootrec.exe /scanOS will now find the windows installer.
Now the tool from Recovery Tool has the following steps

(note on first use of the tool it logs into the settings of Rollback RX using username Administrator and password set when you install RollbackRX on Windows)

followed the steps to restore MBR and when I click restart in the recovery environment I'm not able to have the changes save.
The first time I opened decrypt partition it said successful now it errors out.

I'm able to find and select shield.bat for restore MBR backup and get success message

I select the Windows folder (C:/Windows) for BCD backup and get success message

Selecting the Windows folder for restore registry backup also shows success message

Then I restart the machine with the start button > restart.

After following those steps The computer with the USB drive removed now can not locate the windows install, it's as if the steps taken above did not save.

The recovery tool says failed on decrypt (Rollback says this means it's already decrypted)
Lets me choose the shield.bat file and says this worked.
Lets me choose the Windows folder for BCD backup and says it worked

Lets me choose the Windows folder for restoring registry backup and says it worked
(these are all buttons seen when the restore tool from Rollback RX is loaded)
However it doesn't seem to save anything.

The Restore tool also has a file explorer which shows the files of the new unencrypted drive.
worst case I can copy files to a new drive.. when I get one. :clapping:

There's one change though. Now when I run an installer for Windows 10 and choosing to repair my computer, advanced, CMD

and run

bootrec.exe /scanOS

I get the message 1 windows Install is found.. Yippie! the computer can recognize Windows right?

Scanning all sources for Windows Installations..
Total identified Windows installations: 1
{1} C:\Windows
Add installation to boot list? Yes (y) No (n) All (a)

YES THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WANT!

y

The volume does not contain a recognized file system.
Please make sure all file system drivers are loaded.

So here I am. I've reached my technical limit as how to fix this.
Windows knows there's a windows installer but the MBR can't ..mbr?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
